Books about Paw Paw Lake, Michigan

From the author: ... The impetus for this website started with my decision to write a history of Paw Paw Lake. Twenty years later, this idea has evolved into 5 books, a store, a website and now the books are also from Mattson's House of Decor.

Paw Paw Lake, a hundred year resort history 1890's-1900's
Paw Paw Lake, a hundred year resort history 1890's-1900's - This is the first book written about Paw Paw Lake and traces the lakes development in becoming such a famous resort destination. One chapter describes the Crystal Palace Dance Pavilion, located on the Coloma side of the Lake. During the "Big Bands" era, musical acts such as Duke Ellington, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey and Louie Armstrong regularly played the area. Also featured were vocalists such as Doris Day, Perry Como and Merv Griffin. The Ellinee Social Center was the Disneyland of the Midwest for that period of time. Ray Kroc, of McDonald's fame, at one time was a pianist playing at one of the Paw Paw Lake dance pavilions. Boats circled the lake dropping vacationers off at various hotels and dance pavilions. One in particular, The Honeymoon, even took passengers up and down the river to Watervliet.

Paw Paw Lake, Images of a Lake
Paw Paw Lake, Images of a Lake - This second book shows the reader, by using photographs and old postcards, how and why the lake was so successful in drawing Chicago vacationers to its' shores. One of the advantages to the lakes attractions was the electric interurban train that went to both sides of the lake. The collage of items on the cover of this book gives an image of the types of entertainment that was available. Civil War reunions, Roaring 20's celebrations, and Yacht Club boat races were all part of the lake's attractions.

History of Little Paw Paw Lake and Deer Forest
A History of Little Paw Paw Lake and Deer Forest, Michigan - Little Paw Paw Lake has always been overshadowed by the big lake but has its own colorful and unique history. Hotels, cottages, resorts and a dance hall were also available to Little Paw Paw Lake visitors. Consequently, this lake also has a 100 year history.

Deer Forest could easily be a whole book by itself. By 1965, 2.5 million people had visited this amusement park from all over the Midwest. People got to see a variety of animals, rode on the miniature train, fed its deer and took home their Storyland keys for future use.
